Since there is no PGA event this week and with the possible agreement between LIV and the PGA, I will cover this tournament and the LIV event at Trump National FL in late October.
Since I dislike the team concept, I will focus only on the individual play which was won by Cameron Smith last year. I did cover this event last year and looking at my notes it is interesting that golf channel reported that Rory McIlroy suggested that LIV & PGA players get together to discuss how both tours could co-exist. Interesting that he had the insight to see what was coming. My dialogue below may be a little harsh on some, but they are very wealthy men who will never have to worry about money again, so they should be tolerant to a little criticism.
TOP FAVORITES
#1 Dustin Johnson 5/1 World class player and has kept his mouth shut. He will be one of the players who should have little negative reaction when the agreement is final.
#2 Cameron Smith 6/1 Same as Dustin.
#3 Joaquin Niemann 7/1 He was an up and coming player. Bad mouthed PGA when he left.
#4 Taylor Gooch 9/1 One of LIV’s most successful players. He will be OK with the merger.
#5 Louis Oosthuizen 18/1 Same as Gooch, but he is on the downside of his career.
#6 Abraham Ancer 20/1 Some think he is the best longshot at this tournament.
#7 Patrick Reed 20/1 A real mystery, has played well in spots #4 at Masters.
#9 Sergio Garcia 20/1 He has burned his bridges, #2 bad guy after Phil.
#10 Paul Casey 25/1 Who cares. Has always been a very good nobody.
LONGSHOTS
Brooks Koepka 40/1 How can you rate this guy so low. Maybe he just isn’t into the LIV format.
Bryson DeChambeau 20/1 Based on his performance at the majors.
Mathew Wolff 35/ 1 He had some emotional issues on PGA. Maybe LIV was a good move.
NO WAY A special category to show my disappointment with some of the LIV players. Phil Mickelson 250/1 used to be a one of my favorites, but after reading the book “Phil” by Alan Shipnuck, and his behavior since his LIV involvement, I think he has lost most of the loyal following he had.
Pat Perez 500/1 Why they wanted this guy I don’t know. Big mouth, limited talent.
Henrick Stenson 600/1 Could have been Ryder Cup Captain and still made a lot of money without LIV. He is on the downside of his career but the LIV money may have been hard to turn down.
James Pilot 300/1 He got a lot of money coming out of Michigan State as the #1 amateur, but nobody knows who he is. Look at Viktor Holland and Ledvig Alberg who were in a similar situation. Great college and amateur careers, and look at them now. He earned about $2M in 2022 from LIV events and was ranked 35 of 48 players. I think he would have been better off in the long run if he had taken the PGA approach. He is young and if he is as good as his amateur and collegiate record he may prosper with the new arrangement between LIV & PGA.
