COMENTARY

After RD 3 it looks like a 2 horse race and for the 1st 8 holes it was as Rory makes 2 long birdie putts on 9 & 10 to go from 2 to 4 up. Then he bogies 11, horrendous DB on 17 and bogie on 14 to lose lead to Justin Rose who -5 thru 13. He makes a 30’ putt on 18 to put pressure on Rory who misses a makable putt n 15 for eagle and a 2 stroke lead but birdies.

Despite Rose’s great birdie on 18 McIlroy has chances to win and had to settle for a playoff.

On the 1st playoff hole hits an excellent 2nd shot within 3’ of hole and makes birdie putt to win.

Through 10 holes It looked like McIlroy would win easily as DeChambeau was clearly off his game. Aberg and Scheffler were threatening but it seemed Rory would cruise to victory. However mistakes and so/so putting put him in danger of loosing again as he had done at the 2022 OPEN and last year US Open. While Rory was struggling, Justin Rose was coming on strong with a 32 on the back 9 despite 2 bogies, and looked like he could steal the tournament as he had in the US Open at Marion in 2013. However McIlroy made key shots on 25, 17 and on the 1st playoff hole,18 to win the Grand Slam and not only make himself happy, but the entire golfing world who were rooting for him.

LIV PERFORMANCES

Other than DeChambeau’s first 3 RDs, Reed’s 3rd place finish and a surprising 14th place for Bubba Watson, the did not perform up to their expectations, showing LIV competition is an issue. DeChambeau even commented he had trouble with the greens.
