Par 72 Purse $7.2M-$1M 14%
NB: This is a revised version of blog#186 posted last week incorrectly with 2023 information. The 2024 tournament is this week and here is current information.
HISTORY Field is probably the weakest field of the 8 Fall tournaments. The top ranked player is Max Greyserman who has not won yet on the PGA Tour. In 2022 there was a much stronger field with Scottie Scheffler being the favorite, and also included Viktor Hovland, Tony Finau, Colin Morikawa, Brian Herman and Billy Horschel. Scheffler came in 3rd behind Brian Harman and winner Russell Henley. Last year Eric van Rooyan won with Matt Kucher 2nd. Kucher is infamous in this tournament for an incident in 2018 when he won $12.6M and it is said that he promised his substitute local caddie (David “El Tucan” Ortiz) $130,000 if he won. He gave him only $5,000 and tournament officials were so upset they were not going to invite him back. Later he reconsidered and gave Ortiz another $50,000, still much less than the normal 10%.
FAVORITES This is the 6th of 8 Fall events with another limited field, so picking a winner is very difficult. I feel one of the 4 favorites will win.
1 Max Greyserman 16/1 My pick to win, has come close this year and gets his 1st win.
2 Cameron Young 20/1 Has not won yet and is due, maybe this is the week.
3 Beau Hessler 22/1 Has played very well in the Fall tournaments, could win.
4 Maltti Schmid 22/1 He has also played well lately finished 3rd at Shriners.
My LONGSHOTS *Legitimate, Others Sentimental little chance to win but would be nice.
* Lucas Glover 25/1 Played well at Back Desert and could sneak in if his putter is hot.
*Matt Kucher 30/1Has played pretty well in Fall and with his 2018 behavior is lucky to be back.
Harry Higgs 400/1 Gained his PGA card for 2025 and is a Sponsors exemption.
Joel Dahman 150/1 OWGR 241 and only 1 top 10 this year but a good guy.
FEEL GOOD STORY Max Greyserman
He is ranked 48th in FedX points and 42nd OWGR, and has 5 top 5’s in 2024, but nobody knows him. Last week he came within less of an inch of making a 30’ birdie putt on 18 for a playoff at the ZOZO. In July at the 3M he finished 2nd, 1 stroke behind Jhonattan Vegas and 2 weeks later at The Wyndham he led after the 3rd RD but fell apart on the last 5 holes to finish 2nd by 5 strokes. If he can learn to finish strong he should win soon. I think he may win this tournament, if not maybe The Sony, American Express, or the Farmers to start 2025.
