Blog#138 Preview Wells Fargo Championship

Quail Hallow GC Charlotte NC Par 71

May 9-12 2024 Purse $20M same as last as year

HISTORY

Last years winner Wyndham Clark-19 led for the last 3 RDs. This years field is 59 players with no cut.  Since this is the 6th signature event and it is a pretty good field with no cut and no Scottie Scheffler, so its wide open.  The last 3 difficult holes are named the “Green Mile”.

Favorites

1 Rory McIlroy(9/1) If his approach game is like Zurich he could win, won in 2021.

2 Xander Schauffele(11/1) I have picked him to win so may times but he has to win soon.

3 Ludvig Aberg(13/1) Most talented young player in golf one of my picks to win.

4 Wyndham Clark(19/1) Tough to repeat if he plays like last year or Pebble Beach watch out.

5 Patrick Cantlay(22/1). He has been so inconsistent I can’t see him winning.

6 Colin Morikawa(22/1) He was in the top 2 for 3 RDs at Heritage but 5 bogies in Rd 4.

7 Viktor Hovlad(24/1) Something is wrong, his play this year has been so/so at best.

8 Max Homa(24/1) Won in 2022 and always a threat but has not played well this year.

9 Tommy Fleetwood(24/1) He led after RD 1 last year finished 5th be nice to see him win.

10 Sahith Theegala(27/1) Has to stop with the self inflected errors.  He is too hot and cold.

MY LONGSHOTS

11 Matt Fitzpatrick(30/1) Seems to always be in the leaderboard needs 4 good RDs.

19 Ben An(45/1) Great finish at Byron Nelson still looking for his 1st PGA win.

25 Will Zalatoris(50/1) All depends on his recovering from back issues, #2 at Genesis.

30 Akshay Bhatia(55/1) If he is on his game especially putting he could win.

42 Jake Knapp(175/1) If he plays like he did on the first 2 RDs at Byron Nelson he could win.

LIV UPDATE Bruce Koepka won the Singapore tournament last week and as a former champion has been invited along with at least 15 other LIV players to play at Valhalla.

18th hole at Quail Hallow.  Last hole of “the Green Mile” and considered by Nick Faldo the hardest par 4 on the PGA TOUR.  It is 492 yards with a small creek which runs down the entire left side of the hole and is a factor off the tee.
