#1 Oct. 29, 2023 Start of Vol. 3 Part 3A PGA/DPTOUR/LIV/PIF Updates
This past weekend is one of the few when there is not a PGA event. Since the end of the 3 tournament Tour Championship series there have been 4 very good fall events, a few DP tour events and 2 LIV events. I will cover a few of the remaining 2023 PGA events but most of my future blogs for 2023 will be similar to the ones to be published this week. They will cover any information about the 2024 PGA season and ongoing coverage of the PIF/PGA agreement. One of the key issues for any new agreement will be purses. How much and who pays. No purses for the PGA 2024 season have been announced except for the 8 signature events $20M and the Players $25M, both same as last year.
PURSES
The purse for the Waste Management Phoenix Open was $20M last year because it was a signature event. This year it will be replaced by the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am which has had a weak field and TV ratings for the past few years, and needed the shot in the arm of a signature event. The result of this is that Waste Management purse will be reduced this year to around $9M, and this could set the tone for future PGA events. Some decision will have to be made in time for the 2nd event of the 2024 season the Sony Open. In 2021 the purse was $6.6M, 2022 $7.5M, 2023 $7.9 and 2024 will probably be between $8 & 9M.
No explanation or reason has been given for the total purse of this years ZOZO Championship being reduced from $11 million to $8.5 million (-$2.5M 23%).
