PREVIEW

This is one of the tournaments which may be effected by the arrangement between LIV & PGA.

Only 2 top players are in the field.  Justin Thomas entered the tournament at the last minute when he missed the cut at the OPEN and fell to #76 in the FedX standings.  Thomas missed the cut again and will play in the Wyndham Championship next week which he will probably have to win or finish very high to qualify for the Tour Championship.  The only other top player is Tony Finau defending his title, and does play in many of these secondary tournaments.

FEEL GOOD STORY: Hodges Only 3 bogies in all 4 RDs.  He shot 63 in first RD and led wire to wire and moved from #74 to #33 in FedX, and also qualified for Wyndham next week.

He is now playing in the Tour Championship.  It is his first PGA win in 65 starts since 2018.

PREVIEW

This is the 84th year for the tournament that started as The Greater Greensboro Open.

Sam Snead won his 1st of 8 in 1938 and his last in 1965 as the oldest player to win a PGA Tour event.  The winners trophy is named for him, and last years winner was Tom Kim.

This years winner will get 500 FedX points and if outside the top 70 may get into the Tour Championship.  Example, If Justin Thomas wins he will go from #77 to #37.  There are only 14 of the top 50 OWGR playing in this tournament and 5 are not in the top 70.  Justin Thomas 77, Adam Scott 80, Shane Lowry 81, Billy Horschel 115 and Ludvig Aberg 145.  If any of them win they are in.

OPENING FAVORITES ODDS

Sungjae Im 16/1 FedX #36 but he does not need to win and I don’t see it.

Hideki Matsuyama 18/1 FedX 56 A win moves him to 20th place.  Big incentive.

Sam Burns 20/1 FedX #19 A win and he is in the top 10.  I think he wins.

Adam Scott 22/1 FedX #80 He has played a lot of golf, don’t think gets in.

Shane Lowry 22/1 FedX #81 I would love to see him get enough points to get into top70.

Justin Thomas 28/1 FedX #77Missed cut last week.  He needs some time off.

Ludvig Aberg 28/1 FedX  #145 He wins he is in at #65.  He could win!

Wyndham results will be posted Monday Aug 7 with an overall preview of The Three Tour Championship events.
