RESULTS RBC CANADIAN OPEN June 8 to 11, 2023
Due to Covid, this tournament was canceled in 2020 & 2021. It was first played in 1904 and is the 3rd oldest continuously running tournament after The OPEN & US Open. Arnold Palmer won in 1955, his first PGA Tour victory. It is ironic that the LIV/PGA agreement is announced at this event, since the first LIV event took place in London in 2022, the same weekend as this tournament. The field is the normal 156, but very few top players, so as expected not a very exciting event. That’s a shame. The atmosphere was great with fans singing the national anthem and loud but polite. Maybe the new entity will make this tournament more important.
ROUND 1 Rory did not step up, Canadien Cory Conners winning may win.
#1 Corey Conners-5 67 and 3 others.
#13 Justin Rose-3 69 birdied 5 of last 6 holes on his front 9, then +1, and 14 others.
#36 Rory McIlroy-1 71 Birdied 1st hole, 5 total birdies, 4 bogies. And 32 others.
#70 Tyrrell Hatton E 72/ 4 birdies, 4 bogies. I think he will come back with 65 or 67 in RD 2.
ROUND 2
#1 Carl Yuan(300/1)-9 67 12 birdies in 2 RDs #4 to #1. Finishes 17.
#2 Corry Conners-8 69/ 4 birdies, 1 bogie. May be 1st Canadian to win since 1954.
#2 Tyrrell Hatton-8/ 9 birdies, 1 bogie, after Par on 1st RD. My pick to win.
#6 Harry Higgs-7 one of my favorite players & 5 others.
#12 Rory McIlroy-7/ 5 birdies, 0 bogies. Best RD in a while. Two more like this and he may win
CUT-1 Missed Sam Burns E. Only top player to miss cut.
#102 Michael Brooks+2 His Cinderella PGA run is over, but 69 on Rd2.
ROUND 3 Winner should come from this group. I think Pan will fold, winner Rory or Rose.
#1 CJ Pan-14 66 He has been around the lead all week. Birdied last 2 holes for lead.
#2 Rory McIlroy-12/11 birdies in last 2RDs. 1 more day and he wins his 3rd straight.
#2 Tommy Fleetwood-12/ 9birdies, 1 bogie after 2 RDs of 70.
#2 Justin Rose-12 Shot 30m on final 9 holes.
#2 Harry Higgs-12 Three great RDs. I would LOVE to see this guy win!!!
#2 Andrew Novak-12 He has had 3 very good RDs, but who is he?
#2 Mark Hubbar-12 Least likely to win.
#8 Nick Taylor-11 Low round of 63, birdie free. May be 1st Canadian to win.
#9 Corey Conners-10 Good RD but not good enough. Doubt if he can win since 1954.
#13 Tyrell Hatton-8 72 Very disappointing. He seems to always find a way to loose.
FINAL ROUND Tommy Fleetwood started strong with birdies on first 2 holes to tie for the lead. Then birdies 16 & 17 to force a playoff. Taylor met the challenge by making birdies on #17 & #18, then makes a 72’ putt for eagle on the 4th playoff hole which was incredible. He becomes the 1st Canadian since 1954 to win. The crowd was awesome and what started as a boring tournament finished as one of the best this year.
#1 Nick Taylor-17 Also putted very well including winning putt. $1,620,000
#2 Tommy Fleetwood-17 Put on a putting clinic from #16 on. $981,000
#3 Tyrrell Hatton-16 DB on 5 or he wins with 63, 9 birdies. $477,000
#3 C.T.Pan-16 2 bogies on #3 & #8 gave up lead, but birdied 4 of last 5. $477,000
#6 Eric Cole-14/ 9 birdies for low RD. A great story, 34 yr old rookie. $315,000
#8 Justin Rose-13 DB on #8 a killer. $281,250
#9 Rory McIlroy-12 Bogies #5 & 6. Plus 2 on front 9. $245,250
#12 Harry Higgs-11 Four pretty good RDs. His best finish in a while. $178,650
#20 Cory Connors terrible start+4 first 5 holes 74 after 70. $102,330
