RESUTS WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP MAY 4 TO 7, 2023
Field is 156. The last 3 holes are called “The green mile” and are very difficult. Nick Faldo calls #18 the hardest par 4 on the Tour. Last years tournament was moved to Potomac MD so that Quail Hallow could host the Presidents Cup from Sept 22 to 25, 2022.
FIRST ROUND
#1 Tommy Fleetwood-6 65 One eagle 4 birdies 0 bogies I would like to see him get his 1st win.
#2 Kevin Streelman-5 66 Six birdies and 1 biggie. I doubt if he can finish in the top 10.
#2 KH Lee-5 66 Bogied the 2nd hole then 6 birdies, but has not won a big one.
#2 Taylor Moore-5 66 No way this guy is in the top 10 tomorrow. 3 bogies 2nd RD 2 to #13.
#2 Ryan Palmer-5 66 Not a relative and at age 46 a B player, 4 bogies in 2nd Rd to #20.
#2 Xander Schauffele-5 He had lead until + 2 on last 3 holes but he may win.
#2 Emiliano Grillo-5 No way! Shoots 73 in 2nd RD to #38.
#8 Patrick Cantlay-4 67 He was-3 on the last 3 holes, and may be in the final group Sunday.
#8 Sahith Theegala-4 67 Six birdies 2 bogies. Good young player, due to win.
#8 Tom Kim-4 and 5 others.
#16 Rory McIlroy-3 68 He played much better than I expected. Maybe 3 week layoff helped.
#16 J. Thomas-3 Not playing his best golf but still in the hunt.
SECOND ROUND Top 10 players all shot under 70 for the first 2 rounds, except Fleetwood. Finau had 3 bogies on 1st 7 holes goes from 38th to 52. Finishes tied for 23rd.
#1 Wyndham Clark-8 67 Shoots 2 67’s for lead.
#1 Tyrrell Hatton-8 65 Lowest round of the day to come from #23 to lead.
#1 Nate Lashley-8 66 Five birdies 0 bogies.
#4 Xander Schauffele-7 Still the man to beat
#4 Justin Thomas 67 & Adam Scott 68-7 Both will challenge if they have a good Saturday.
#4 SJ Im-7 66 Six birdies 1 bogie to go from -2 to -7.
#4 JJ Spaun-7 67 Five birdies including #18 1 bogie.
#4 Adam Svensson-7 67 Eagle on #7, his 16th hole keeps him in the top 10.
#10 Tommy Fleetwood-6 Shoots par and probably out of it, but finishes 5th.
#38 Viktor Hovland-2 Birdies 4 straight holes on front 9, but then 3 bogies on back 9.
#55 Sahith Theegala on DB & 5 bogies to fall from #8.
#55 Rory McIlroy Bogies 4 of 6 holes from #5 to #10 but finishes last 8 holes at -1 to make cut.
CUT
Shane Lowry 2 RDS over par+2, Jayson DayE DB’s #17 to miss cut, Sam BurnsE Par 2 RDS. Jordan Spieth+7 Started with DB on #18 in RD 1 then 1 DB, 6 bogies in 2nd RD.
THIRD ROUND McIlroy & Theegala play together. Both shoot par with 4 &3 bogies #52.
#1 Wyndham Clark-16 63 Eight birdies for lowest RD of day could lead to his 1st win.
#2 Xander Schauffele-14 64 One eagle, 7 birdies, but 2 bogies, or he ties for lead.
#3 Terrell Hatton-11 68 Three bogies hurt.
#4 Adam Scott-11 67 At 42 playing his best golf in a long time this year.
#5 Tommy Fleetwood-10 along with Im & English
FINAL ROUND Surprisingly Clark totally outplayed Schauffele from the 9th hole on.
