THE EISENHOWER TREE was a loblolly pine located on the 17th hole of Augusta National Golf Club.  It was more than 120 years old and stood 65’ high.  In the 1950’s it was named after US President Dwight D Eisenhower who in 1956 unsuccessfully lobbied to have it taken down because it interfered with his golf game.  Chairman Clifford Roberts denied his request and the tree remained until February of 2014 when it was removed due to damage caused by a major ice storm.  A cross-section of the tree was preserved and is on display at the Eisenhower Museum in Abilene KS.  A similar cross-section remains at Augusta.  Its size, history, and location on a prominent golf course, made it one of the most famous trees in American golf.
